And Then We Were Three

We founded Redmonk in November 2002, which means we’re now a three year old company. I am extremely proud to announce that we have finally found the right person to help us build the business and take it the next level.

We’re a three analyst firm now, and triangles of course have magic properties.

Step forward Michael Cote.

We’re not in a hurry because RedMonk is a value business with no flip in mind, or sight, but if I had my way we might have hired earlier. I thank Stephen for encouraging me to hold out for quality and fit.

As Ryan Carson said today:
Dont go for rock stars. Go for quiet talent. Find someone you trust, who is not that well known, but is really good.
That is what we did. Cote is not exactly quiet, as you will all find out… in the industry analyst business he is an unknown quantity. Cote is however a prolific blogger and linker, which is, of course, how we discovered him. No headhunters required.

People that follow my blog probably suspected that something was up (I know Ian Skerrett did), given recent posts on How To Become An Industry Analyst, with its discussion of what to look for in terms of skills.

Michael has really solid technical experience, and great communications skills. Those are crucial qualities in building RedMonk.

So do we need to turn this into a press release, or will you all help us get the message to market? I am banking on the latter. Press releases aren’t dead, but neither are they necessary.

I hope you will all show Cote a warm welcome, and I look forward to bringing him onboard with our client and publishing projects.

  1. A 33% increase in headcount in a single day? Now, that’s impressive 🙂

Congratulations to the 3 of you

  2. Congratulations James. There’s something in the air I think! It’s great to see smaller companies doing well. – Neil

  4. I’ve personally known Cote for several years. You’ve definitely got the right man for the job. Congratulations on the new hire!

  5. Huge congrats to everyone! Redmonk now has a 6% share of my blogroll 🙂

  6. Cote – someone who actually does more than you ask him too, and in a good way, which is exceedingly rare. The workplace equivalent of an ’83 Cateau Lafite Rothschild.

We can expect to compete for his employment if my company ever takes off, so you’d better keep him happy. 😉

  7. Congratulations to Cote on his new job and to James and Steve on their new colleague. I generally agree with the cliche “there’s no more important decision in business than hiring decisions” but this is especially true when you’re a group of two becoming a group of three!

  8. a great note and string – congrats to Redmonk and Michael and I look forward to seeingStephen for the first time? in a few weeks here

  10. James – I have said it to verbally, but for the record, congrats to you and Steve – and good luck to Cote – welcome to the extended family 🙂

  11. Big news! Hiring just the right person to join a small team is an art Рcongratulations on making it happen. I send a big welcome to Cot̩.
