Microsoft is going after RIM, says Tris Hussy, so it will be interesting to see how RIM responds. Bob Warfield makes an intriguing case for the fit between Twitter and RIM.
In the department of total non-sequitors, why shouldn’t RIM (Blackberry’s owner) try to acquire Twitter? It’s all the rage for web companies to move onto the desktop, why shouldn’t mobile get a piece of that action? And what better way than via Twitter?
Orwellian (though corporate rather than state) – sure. Its always interesting to see how reality distortion fields work in socialising technology. Google gets away with things we used to slaughter Microsoft for. Microsoft itself used to show a 24 hour clock where it managed your day for you- no thanks! But there are also generational aspects at work.
Jeff Nolan used the “benevolent dictator” argument for his Apple love the other day. I used to be a privacy bigot. But you can’t use Twitter and blog and live declaratively and still maintain the nature of your privacy hasn’t changed.
Hey – I even registered for the biometric eye scanner at UK airports on the way out this time. I am making a transition here. IT seems many of us are. I don’t know the end game. But I do know that people just dont think all corporations are evil (even if they are).
Birthdays are now public information. Tom (Jerakeen) says even social security numbers are now effectively public info. With dopplr I want my friends to know where I am.
Why do I think Twitter would be cool for RIM? Apart from the really bad recent outage, RIM is pretty damn good at running a high QoS network. People love the devices. And Twitter could potentially bring RIM some hip, pushing it into the consumer space and massivelt expanding its market.
That is, if they can make the Crackberry browser not suck.

Never would have thought of that connection James, but it is a nice fit for information services. Maybe we’d get a decent way to post to Twitter from our BlackBerries then!

I think both Twitter and Dopplr would be good fits for RIM, further I would guess they would be great for Google mobile for the same reasons.
Nice one James
