omfg… omfg….and once again omfg. go watch this video about the future of user interfaces. Perceptive Pixels – can I invest now please? Jeff Han could be the next Bill Gates. I am a firm believer that all computing revolutions are revolutions in UI (sure you can take a cut that its storage, but UI is what makes IT more consumable by more communities.) But Han will need investment to bring the technology to the masses, rather than just film studios. Like I say where do I buy stock? That’s a revolution I would happily contribute to.

Looks like these guys have started to hang out with these guys: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/162976/awesome_new_desktop/
The gestures look really familar as does the physics engine behind it all. I always wonder why do people insist on making these things vertical? This should be my desktop, really my physical desk should be made out of this stuff.

Here is the link to the initial research from NYU:
http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/
It is based on a principal called: Frustrated Total Internal Reflection which has an okay wikipedia entry:

Just had to nerd it up a bit. 🙂

I really love the work that he does, but I don’t see how it’s going to help me do most of my work better.
I mean, he programs stuff, right? Why not come up with some use cases for programmers to want something like this?
For playing around with things? Hell yeah I want one. Practically… uhmmm… I dunno.

Bruce Tognazzini talks a bit about Multi-Touch interfaces in his Ask Tog column examining the iPhone. Interesting stuff (it was part of his Starfire project at Sun).
