Microsoft Vista requires a Ferrari Engine

Apparently there is some negativity going on because Microsoft sent out some Acer-Ferrari laptops (I think they are hinky) to bloggers as “review” models to get an experience of Vista. I have absolutely nothing against Microsoft doing so, though I hope said influencers would make a declaration or disclaimer if they then review Vista and so on. Marshall got one.

What strikes me though is not the ethical question, but the subtext.

Check out the specs… “an AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core 2ghz CPU, 2GB of DDR2-667 RAM, AMD-ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 on a 15.4″ widescreen. It also has a 160GB SATA drive, HD-DVD reader and burner as well as a 1.3mp camera.”

That’s some pretty heavy specifications. The message I take away is not that Microsoft has an ethical problem but that the hardware upgrades required to run Vista smoothly are going to delight PC manufacturers most of all… If you need a Ferrari to have a decent road experience then Redmond, we may indeed have a problem. 2gig2gig…

The Laughing squid got one too, and to be fair he received a lowerspec machine, but then he also got a low Windows Experience Index (WEI)

I can’t remember where I read it but one of the investment analysts just noted we’re about to have a price hike in PCs for the first time in a decade. The old Wintel treadmill still has legs, evidently, although this time it could be AMD that gets the biggest booster.

“My wei sucks, I *need* a Ferrari so I can do my homework mom, please mom…”
