Man what a week. Two consulting gigs, one with IBM, the other in Redmond. Both looking at open source and what it means.
You know when you get a cold, and know you have to get a plane for 10.5 hours, and then have a layover, before another hour flight? all economy? that was me… I felt like i had a pound of warm wax in my ear by the time i got off the second plane.
You know what strikes me most about IBM and MS, and their respective approaches to source code management, and customer support? There is a lot more commonality than you would expect. Microsoft is going to force some reappraisals over the next couple of years, and I look forward to covering and encouraging a more open and transparent approach to service delivery. will I be an irritant? of course. will i try and keep an open mind? Its the only way to live. Microsoft is more open that its given credit for, and IBM maintains a nice line in proprietary advantage (nothing scales like TPF, MQSeries invented messaging-based integration).
This post is really a place holder for a wider discussion of the issues, but suffice to say i have to thank my old buddies Vitamin C and Zinc for getting me through the week in one place. Now i have to hop on a plane to LA, before sinking into a G&T sleep (hopefully) and waking tomorrow afternoon in London.
Its been a great week – thanks to Rob Curran at Waggener Estrom, Jason Matusow at Microsoft, Adam Jollans and Jerrilyn Glanville from IBM, and my spar, Stephen O’Grady. This may not be the most exciting post ever, but i wanted to say hi everyone. i hope you all have a trouble peaceful and good weekend.
Try and share something with someone. Be human..
