So the debate over whether Java should be open sourced or not continues at OSCon this week. Apparently Tim O’Reilly was surprised by the fact Sun got a round of applause for its stewardship of Java during the debate on open source at JavaONE. It maybe shouldn’t surprise Tim though–after all O’Reilly is driving the excellent notion of the Architecture of Participation into the mainstream, and its surely hard to argue that Java has not engendered community participation, even if sometimes the knives, teeth and claws are out.
Its natural that OSCon delegates should want to see more open source code bases, but my favorite angle on this issue this week comes in the shape of a movie — open up Starbucks!
