Jonny says RedMonk are the natural analyst firm to use for blogging strategy advisory because we use the tools and methods of social media ourselves. This seems about right to me: its really not about tool selection, though we know the tools inside out.

Another interesting thing about blogger analysts is that most of them aren’t “professional” analysts. Somebody who is passionate about databases, or social media, or whatever is just as capable of providing useful insight as the guy who has traditionally made a living at it. The blogging ecosystem provides opportunities for those non-professional analysts to connect with companies that need and want their insight, bypassing the Gartner’s of the world in the process.
It’s not going to rock the industry overnight, but as a long term trend it’s hard to imagine how the big traditional firms will maintain their position as more ands more consumers of research and analysis become comfortable with the notion that the traditional firms don’t have a monopoly on intelligent insight.

I for one fully agree with what COD said. I recently approached Gartner to start a conversation on this front, especially with respect to my core interest area.

Cod – we fully understand that, and have written extensively in that regard. recently there was quite a thread on this blog about professional vs amateur.
Manoj – will be interesting to hear how the conversations go, if at all. Does Gartner have an associate model? – i don;t think so
