  1. Richer interface. As far as I am concerned, the very best interface I have ever had the pleasure to work with is the perfectly white piece of paper. Just the paper, a pencil (mechanical), and my brain.

But the real question is that of user-generated-content. What are the two most expressive ways for people to express themselves? Voice, and Art. Voice is Words, and Voice is music. Art is drawing, sculpture, painting, and physical expression (dance, gestures, grimaces, etc). Combine voice-is-words and drawing and you get writing. Writing is best done on an unencumbered surface, like a sheet of paper. But the sheet of paper is hard to webify. So we have the textarea tag. A good textarea is, as far as I am concerned, the finest mode of expression on a network, and is preferred by most people, since most people suck at drawing, painting, photography, and singing. The latter four require rich client apps to capture and manipulate correctly, but writing is fine with a textarea.

Wikipedia is essentially a user-friendly textarea.
