It is widely claimed that AI-enhanced computer technology will eliminate nearly half of all jobs in the next 10 to 20 years. In his Monktoberfest talk, Jim Bessen argues that that claim is false. In fact, computer automation may increase employment in many occupations. Nevertheless, computer automation is highly disruptive and poses a major social challenge. But the challenge is not a shortage of jobs; it is a shortage of skills to work with the new technology.
