Finishing the Domain Redirection

Share via Twitter Share via Facebook Share via Linkedin Share via Reddit

Will have more on the Microsoft Server and Tools Analyst Summit I’ve been at this week when I get the chance, but in the meantime I wanted to let everyone know that all of our RedMonk domains (redmonk.com, red-monk.com, monkchips.com, peopleoverprocess.com, etc) have now been permanently forwarded over to Johncompanies servers. It’s worth noting that the folks from Johncompanies have been really helpful; I’ve been emailing back and forth with them, and in most cases I get a response back within a couple of minutes – even if my questions are unbelievably stupid.

Given the regrettable latency of the DNS system, the changes implemented today – which allow us to completely bypass 1and1 – will take anywhere from 12-48 hours to propagate across the internet. With any luck, however, your DNS will pick them up sooner rather than later. To check and see whether or not you’ve got the new records, load my blog – http://www.redmonk.com/sogrady. If you “View Source” on that page and see a couple of lines saying something like frameset redirect – you haven’t received the changes yet. If, on the other hand, you see pages of content, your DNS has been updated.

One important FYI: despite all of our precautions, it is possible – highly unlikely, but possible – that we could experience a disruption of email. I’ve taken great pains to ensure that the new email records are the same as the old ones – and have queried Johncompanies nameservers to ensure this – but whenever changes are made, there’s room for error. If you happen to email me, James or Cote in the next day or two and it gets bounced with some weird error message, please contact me at [email protected] or 617.320.9757 and we’ll straighten it out ASAP. Even should this transition go smoothly, you’ll see another message similar to this when we reroute our email again next week to our new Zimbra host, MACCIuS.

Can’t wait for these hardware and hosting problems to be a thing of the past.
