It’s been a little while since I last checked in on the Open Document Format topic, partially because I’ve been busy on other fronts but also due to the fact that there has been less actual progress to report on. The good news is that while I’ve been slacking off a bit in that area, Mr. Updegrove has not. According to this entry, it looks as if the ODF decision has not been derailed by the resignation of its primary champion w/ the MA government, Peter Quinn. Indeed, the second sentence of a press release annoucing Quinn’s replacement states:
Gutierrez will be responsible for overseeing the final stages of implementation of the state’s new Open Document format proposal, to go into effect in January 2007.
But the really interesting analysis comes here, in which Updegrove suggests – as suggested to me a while ago by someone on the opposite side of the ODF debate – that MA Governor Romney will be using ODF as a political asset, much as NY Attorney General Spitzer has with his “stand up to big corporations” efforts.
