Live from Bath, ME

BIW in ShadowI realized while talking with a few people at a recent conference that RedMonk’s home base – Bath, ME – is a frequent topic of discussion in person, but not so much on my blog. As a result, Bath is pretty anonymous to most people. To try and rectify that, I got a couple of quick pictures (blame the poor quality on the cloud cover) today of the some major Bath features; my corporate neighbor, the Bath Iron Works (BIW), and the bridges that span the Kennebec.

So for those who are curious, a few quick facts about our corporate hometown:

  1. Location: Bath is about 30 minutes north of Portland, and about 2 hours (depending on how you drive) from Boston. It sits right on the banks of the wide Kennebec river, which comes nearly from Canada to empty into the Atlantic a few miles down from Bath. Quick river fact: Striper and bluefish fishing on the Kennebec is good in the summer months.
  2. BIW: One of the nations largest surviving shipyards, BIW is, I’m told, still the largest employer in Maine and the lifeblood of Bath and many surrouding towns. Quick BIW historical fact: the shipyard pumped out more destroyers in WWII than the entire nation of Japan.
  3. Bridges: there are two bridges in Bath, the old, mostly decommissioned car & train Carlton, and the newer, cars-only Sagadahoc. If you’re headed towards Wiscasset, Thomaston, Rockland or Camden from the south, you’re coming through Bath and over the Sagadahoc bridge. Quick bridge fact: the Carlton bridge was constructed over 75 years ago to alleviate the need to constantly ferry supplies such as gravel and timber across the Kennebec

Anyhow, I hope this gives everyone a slightly better picture of where RedMonk is, and if you happen to be in the area – or are heading up to Camden for PopTech! or something, be sure to drop me a line.
