While we “don’t do numbers” here at RedMonk, I come across some fun numbers each week, here are some (admittedly kinda slim this week):
Geo-gaming
dodgeball was 90% social, 10% discovery. [foursquare is] shooting to have much more of a 40% social, 60% discovery split.
In the Office
But while occasional telecommuting has increased, the percentage of telecommuters who do so regularly has declined. 5% fewer telecommuters worked from home at least once a week in 2008 than in 2006. During the same period, the percentage of telecommuters who worked from home almost every day dropped by 11%.
Check out The Daily Stat for more fun numbers. Also see, “The 4 Hour Workday”:
However, if you work at home, you have no excuse. Scheduling an eight-hour workday is wasting precious hours from your life. If you change how you evaluate your efforts, finishing eight hours of work in 3-4 hours is probable. You might even be able to increase your total output while reducing the amount you work.
This internet is killing us! Oh, wait…
For books that are available on the Kindle, sales are already 35 percent of the same books in print, up from 13 percent just a few months ago. In other words, if a paper book sells 10,000 copies on Amazon, it will sell an additional 3,500 digital copies on the Kindle. Let me repeat that, digital books via the Kindle are selling at 35 percent the level of physical books 18 months after launch.
We Finally Met!
Austin-based Vignette, a developer of web content management software, has been acquired by Open Text in a deal worth approximately $310M. According to Open Text, it will pay $8.00 in cash plus 0.1447 of Open Text common shares for every Vignette common share.

These Guys Are Always Gloomy
“This year’s results show a marked decrease in project success rates, with 32% of all projects succeeding which are delivered on time, on budget, with required features and functions” says Jim Johnson, chairman of The Standish Group, “44% were challenged which are late, over budget, and/or with less than the required features and functions and 24% failed which are cancelled prior to completion or delivered and never used.”
Hotdogs Once a Month
To prevent premature deaths related to red and processed meats, Dr. Popkin suggested in an interview that people should eat a hamburger only once or twice a week instead of every day, a small steak once a week instead of every other day, and a hot dog every month and a half instead of once a week.
Etsy
Craft marketplace Etsy have released their latest sales and stats figures which includes an impressive figure for growth at the site. In March, $12 million of goods were sold – almost 18% higher than February’s $10.2 million. March saw 788, 253 sold and 1,321,317 listed. We guess that makes the average price of a good on Etsy $15.22.
Free TV for $480/gig
On the bottom is gigabytes and on the left is dollars. Yes, dollars. 300 GB would costs you $140,000 on AT&T 3G. You’ll notice that only the 3G providers show up at all, everything else being squished into a single line on the bottom. This is because while Time Warner is charges overages of $1/GB, Sprint is charging $50/GB, Verison $280/GB, and AT&T a ridiculous $480/GB after you exceed the 5GB cap. Everyone is mad about the Time Warner caps, but it’s really the 3G caps that are totally insane. Every iPhone user is on AT&T, so when Hulu for iPhone comes out it’s going to be crazy.
Dollah, Dollah-bill, y’all!
Dollar General, long part of that select club of the500 biggest American companies, appears on this year’s list at No. 259, up 15 places from last year. And Dollar Tree landed on the list for the first time, at No. 499. Those rankings are a far cry from Wal-Mart Stores, which holds the No. 2 position behind Exxon Mobil, but some dollar chains these days are growing faster than Wal-Mart.
