Interesting Gigs

For the developers and/or product managers in the audience, two interesting opportunities for you. Both offer the opportunity to reach wide audiences, albeit in very different ways.

  1. My favorite Web 2.0 music site – bar none – is apparently hiring. Met Anthony a while back at Mashup Camp and he seems like he’d be a great guy to work with. If you know Ajax/FreeBSD/Javascript/MySQL/Perl/PHP, drop him a line.
  2. Via Christopher Blizzard comes word that Red Hat’s got openings on its OLPC team. OLPC, as you might recall, is a project that I’m convinced is hugely important. Even if you don’t share that opinion, however, the work would be interesting: how do you extract the most functionality from a limited platform?

If I was a.) a developer and b.) looking, I’d consider both of these opportunities. But that’s just me.

  1. Someone could also travel to wealth and fame by way of this job if they had the guts. Whoever takes that job will become known to every investor and participant in the kernel, and if they do it well, will eventually be respected for their social skills and management ability as much as for their technical chops. That is a pretty good place to be. You just have to find someone who can overlook the fact that they have to do QA for a long time first…

(Oh, and apropos the OLPC job: while I haven’t actually started at RH yet, I’ve gotten a stream of pre-work materials from them, and I have to say I’ve been very, very impressed. They not only seem to get it at the corporate level, but seem to be very self-conscious about impressing ‘getting it’ on their new hires- which I think is great. Like every company, they aren’t perfect, but they are at least off to the right start.)
