Music of 2006

I enjoyed Hanna’s 2006 musical summary, and thought I’d borrow shamelessly from it. So here are some of the bands I started listening to in 2006.

  • Beirut
  • Camera Obscura
  • Cloud Cult
  • Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton
  • David Bazan
  • Headphones
  • Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins
  • MF Doom
  • M. Ward
  • Phoenix
  • Scourge of the Sea
  • Silversun Pickups
  • Tapes ‘N Tapes
  • The Easy All Stars
  • The Mountain Goats
  • The Oohlas

Favorites out of that group are Beirut (compared often to Neutral Milk Hotel, but w/ a Gypsyish flair), David Bazan (ex-Pedro the Lion frontman – I’m a big fan), and M. Ward (Tom Waits comparisons are a bit misplaced, IMO). All three of which are available on emusic.com, incidentally.

I have never heard of any of these bands… I’m going to need a *big* shovel to dig my head out of the sand at some point.

Geof: i’m a big fan. no idea how i missed him before.

Alex: nah, i think you’ll find same as i have that it’s impossible to keep up w/ everything. i’m hopelessly out of touch, for example, with anything mainstream. haven’t heard any of the new Chili Peppers’ album, as an example.

you might like M. Ward tho. bit more of a songwriter than, say, the Silversun Pickups.
