As soon as I saw the subject of one of my emails this morning, which read “Red Hat Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire JBoss,” I knew my plans for the day were more or less shot. So far, I’ve done three press calls, one customer call, four or five calls with other interested and/or knowledgable parties, and probably a dozen chats about the big news. One of the calls, for those that are interested, was with Steve Gillmor for an appearance on his Gillmor Daily – will drop in a link when I have it (here‘s the link).
I did manage to squeeze in a call with a customer about an ongoing project around 11:30 AM my time, but otherwise my day’s been mostly JBoss/Red Hat. It’s understandable, I suppose, although I don’t share Dana’s opinion on it being a “seismic shift” (and could not disagree more with his analysis vis a vis the Web 2.0 implications).
Anyway, those of you reading this space for long enough might suspect that this is all a long winded way of saying that you’re not getting the analysis Q&A till tomorrow. Those folks would be right. - DTrace v SystemTap Debate:
Following my preview of the SystemTap technology at LinuxWorld last week, we got a pretty interesting debate going with contributors and commenters from both sides. There was some question as to whether a blog is the ideal forum or venue for this debate, and I have to say that I’m not sure. Ryan also emailed to ask that I do what I could to facilitate an open debate between the two, to the extent that that’s possible – a task I’m more than happy to assist with. So, for those of you interested in the topic – what would make the most sense? I’m most interested in customer case studies and experiences, contributed and vetted by all of us: so would a wiki make sense? A structured blogging instance? A specialized mailing list? Bloggerviews (thanks, John, for the term) of folks representing both DTrace and SystemTap? Let me know, and I’ll try and get one or more going. - Mono Dev Looking for a New Gig:
This is not someone who’s asked me for help, but I’ve gotten a lot out of ZacBowling.com over the past few months, and he’s definitely someone I’ve come to respect – especially from the Mono perspective. Mobius (and Boulder)’s Brad Feld expresses regret that his summer venue, Homer, AK, was recently rated as the #1 Up and Coming City by Men’s Journal. I know the feeling. As I inch towards confirming a summer back home in Georgetown, ME, I look forward to the relatively light crowds and low tourist to resident ratio. For those that are curious, I’ve received two potential offers for offices for July and August; while both are in Portland, a bit further than I’d like to commute on a daily basis, they’ll work if I can’t find anything closer. - Comment Issues w/ Movable Type:
I know many of you have run afoul of our at-times over-zealous comment spam prevention system – and please email me any comment that gets blocked, and I’ll get it through – but are any of you also having trouble w/ HTTP 500’s? I’ve gotten a couple from different IP’s, and it appears that our webserver – which is dedicated and just us – may be slowing under the immense spam load currently being directed at our wiki. We did over 2M pageviews last month alone, and I suspect that MT might be affected at times. Be interested to hear if any of you have seen that.
Anyhow, I’ve got to edit a proposal for one of our clients, so I’ll sign off (probably) until tomorrow.
