For those of you that weren’t already aware, August has been officially been declared a “no fly” month for yours truly. With the notable exception of my brother’s wedding this weekend in Iowa, which I probably should attend.
Thus, no LinuxWorld this week. It’s unfortunate, because there are people there that I’d like to speak with, but the conference will go on without me, I’m sure. And some conferences have take precedence over others.
I choose August mostly because it’s the only month I can realistically get away with this; virtually every other month of the year features something I must attend, and while I’ve streamlined my conference schedule somewhat it’s still crowded. One month per year where I’m not flying for work isn’t all that much to ask, I don’t think.
But that doesn’t mean I’m not travelling at all this month, and come September I’ll be right back on the merry-go-round. Some upcoming trips and social events.
Next Week – August 15
At some point during the day a week from Wednesday, I’ll be down in the Boston area working with a client. Since it’s been a while, I thought it would be nice to run a RedMonk social event. If you’re around next Wednesday evening, then, plan on joining me at a venue TBD for a cocktail or two.
First Week of September – Sept 4-7
While plans are still in process, immediately following Labor Day weekend I’ll likely be heading to New York City for a Sun event, to be followed immediately by a trip to San Francisco to a.) attend the Office 2.0 conference (and no, press/media don’t get the free iPhone, so don’t ask for it 😉 and b.) meet w/ clients. If you’re thinking evening event at the House of Shields, you’re thinking like a monk: keep it up.
Second Week of September – Sept 11-14
Fresh off a trip to the left coast, why not take another red eye? A week or two ago I reserved a spot for myself at Mashup Camp 5, held in Dublin. I look forward to visiting my people; the question now is whether I try and extend my time there to include a weekend on one side. We’ll see what the personal budget will hold, but in the meantime, you’d best start preparing yourself for dozens of grainy, poorly framed pictures of Trinity Dublin – where I once studied.
First Week of October – Oct 1-3 / Oct 6-8
Is absurdly crowded, and the RedMonk gang out of necessity will be dividing in order to conquer. My assignment is Adobe MAX, which I believe is in Chicago. About as soon as that’s over, I need to be in Boston for the week of the 6-8 for the GNOME Summit. Which begs the question…when am I going home to Denver?
Returning to Denver
The original plan was to return perhaps a week or two after Labor Day weekend. That plan’s problematic because I’ll be on the road the two weeks following. But what about the third and fourth weeks?
Well, I suppose those could work, but…
- After straight two weeks on the road – one of them in Ireland – I’m not likely to be eager to hop back on a plane to get Az to Denver, return to Maine and then sit in a car for two plus days.
- I have to be in Boston the first week of Boston anyway for the GNOME Summit and would save on the cost of a flight from Denver if I stay east that long.
And, yes, there are my beloved Red Sox. I told many of you that when I returned would depend in part on how the Sox were doing, and while there’s a very long way to go, they’ve exceeded my expectations thus far.
So while I’m not prepared to state at this time that I’ll return to Denver only when the Red Sox season is concluded, I would be lying if I said that that didn’t factor into my planning. I know how that sounds, but there it is.
Anyway, more updates as events warrant, but the key takeaways are: not getting on a plane until September, and that Boston area folks should keep next Wednesday evening free.
