The Nightmare is Almost Over

This post, if you can see it, is probably coming to you through the magic of FeedBurner. Our migration from 1and1 to Johncompanies is mostly complete, now we simply have to wait for the DNS forwarding changes I initiated this evening to propagate throughout the network. In the interim, I’ve instructed FeedBurner to pick up the entries directly from our server as located by IP – it’s at 69.55.233.236. Please note, however, that if you browse to that site, commenting, search and other script enabled functions are not likely to work appropriately until the DNS is complete, because the links all refer back to redmonk.com.

All four blogs have been (as near as I can determine) successfully migrated, as has the wiki (apart from the missing logo) and our static website. One other note on the DNS front; redmonk.com/red-monk.com should be repointed within a day or so, but our individual URIs – monkchips.com, peopleoverprocess.com, and tecosystems.org – will take a little longer as I have to figure out the appropriate .htaccess redirect syntax for that. Not hard, but not a high priority.

The best news of all, however, is that the new server is fast. Really fast. While I’m sure we’ll have our share of problems – and I’ve no doubt screwed many things up that are yet to be discovered – I’m hopeful that the frequent HTTP 500 errors that have plagued would-be commenters will be a thing of the past. The reason I can say this is that a complete rebuild of my website – which involves the generation of several hundred pages from the MySQL database and was effectively impossible on our old infrastructure – now takes about 20 seconds. Go figure: dual Opterons and quadrupled memory actually have an impact.

Anyway, if you spot problems over the next couple of days, please drop me a line. Otherwise, it’s time for bed as I have to be up in a couple of hours for the keynote.
