Wow – a couple of days can sure go by fast. I find it a bit strange that it’s been two days since I’ve written anything, but MT doesn’t lie. So my apologies; I’ve been caught between a full schedule of activities, a startling lack of sleep, more travel shenanigans and crappy airport wireless [1]. The good news about last night’s travel was that I made it home; the bad news was that it was far from seamless. The next time I even think about routing through Chicago, someone just shoot me. That airport is just a mess. On my outbound flight, we arrived at the gate 10 minutes early only to discover – as is nearly always the case – that it was already occupied, at which point we were routed into some sort of “Hey kids, there’s Big Ben” roundabout situation looping our gate multiple times to clear the alley for larger planes. Net net? We went from 10 minutes in the black to 20 minutes in the red. And then last night, I spent a delightful hour on the tarmac in Westchester aboard one of those tiny Embraer’s struggling through Q, and another couple of hours sitting on the floor at an absolutely packed O’Hare charging my various devices. But, as James and I discussed this morning, any trip where I make it home the same day I intended to is a good trip. My travel luck is just that bad.
Lots to discuss: Sun’s recent announcement, this week’s IBM conference, and a couple of other quick things. Will get to them as I’m able to – everyone I know seems to have emailed me this week 😉
[1] If you’re going to provision wireless for an airport, make sure it has the ability to scale. While I’m not fond of locations that don’t have wi-fi, it’s even more frustrating to know that it’s there but inaccessible thanks to a continually timing out billing page.
