Ok, maybe it’s not quite time to start stocking the water and canned goods, but this news (which Jeff was kind enough to alert me to this morning, thank you sir) is nonetheless surprising – in a great way. A year ago, who would have thought that Sun and Ubuntu could meet and find not only common ground, but opportunities to help each other? That they could is a testament to the individuals involved on both sides. I would guess that on a macro level there are some Montagues and Capulets within the Linux and Solaris houses that would be happy to see some of the proposed collaborations fail. But having spent time with both Bryan and Jeff back at OSCON, I wouldn’t bet against them. Enthusiasm and intelligence are useful when used in combination, and those two have both in spades.
On a related note, it’s great to see the role that simple, on the ground meetings can have in opening the door to new innovation. Good luck gentlemen; I’ll be watching with great interest.
