The actual business of making money from blogs (as opposed to with blogs, as we try to do here) isn’t truthfully an area I spend a tremendous amount looking at, so it may well be that this link that a friend just forwarded me is old news, but I found it interesting. Microsoft obviously competes with traditional media outlets with its MSN properties, but I wasn’t aware that they’d had immediate ambitions at the so-called new media outlets as well. Again, it may just be that I don’t track it.
As I told my friend, however, I’m rather skeptical of the opportunities for building a career out of weblogging, simply because of the Long Tail nature of the play. I think blogs are an increasingly important component to your day job, but have a tough time seeing them as an individual’s only means of financial support. For every Wonkette, it would seem that there are thousands of aspiring Wonkettes. Just my two cents.
