One of the toughest things for us as analysts to do is to decide which conferences we attend; given that we’re essentially required to attend anywhere from half a dozen to a dozen shows a year for vendor research purposes alone, we don’t have a tremendous amount of free time to play with from an attendance perspective.
That said, I really wish I’d made it to the Emerging Technology Conference (neé the P2P Conference) in San Diego this week; many of the folks I’ve discussed ad nauseam in this space, like Alan Taylor, Josh Schachter, the Flickr gang (Cal, Caterina and Stewart), Werner Vogels and others are there as featured speakers and guests (speaking of which, special thanks to Alan for including a link to this space on his presentation resources page). Would have been a lot of fun, and clearly worth the trip.
In the meantime, I’ll settle for the next best thing: a near flood of reports via my blogroll of the folks that are out there, like Reemer. Will also be looking for podcasts from IT Conversations.
I won’t be able to do the Open Source Business conference in April, but I need to get cracking and get set up for OSCON. Incidentally, for those that are curious, I did submit a proposal to discuss our ongoing efforts to bring open source to industry analysis there but it got negged. Probably was viewed as too RedMonk centric (either that or that open source developers could care less about what us analysts think ;), but it would have made for an interesting discussion, I think.
