I’ve been getting enough of a new type of comment spam that I wanted to be explicit to anyone reading this space on what constitutes a comment that will escape deletion and blacklisting. The simple rule is as follows: add something to the discussion. Doesn’t have to brilliant – hell, it’s not like the entries are – but add something – anything – to the discussion. That, in my view, is the point of commenting – to expand the dialogue, get your two cents in. I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but I wanted to be clear on this before someone gets their feelings hurt after posting a complimentary comment.
I’ve been getting a lot of comments, you see, that go something like, “This site is great”, or “I know why I keep coming back”, accompanied, of course, by the inevitable spam URL. Because I have neither the time nor the inclination to follow each one and figure out whether it’s a legit site or not, they’re gone. Never to return, I hope.
So that’s it – the simple rule is: add something. Anything. Agree/disagree/tell me I’m an idiot, it’s all good. Anything short of that is gone. Now it’s not that I hate being told what you like about the content here, and if you want to add compliments to your comments, well, I won’t complain. But make sure the comments are in there, because it’s your contributions that ultimately make this space interesting.
Make sense?
