Just a quick heads up for those of you who may have been similarly impacted by the Firefox bug that was preventing the display of Zimbra in Ubuntu Edgy – it was patched tonight.[1] The bug is history, and I can now stop running both Firefox and Mozilla. Actually, I may as well remove Mozilla now. The 2.0 release of Firefox – Edgy initially came with 2.0b2 – is slightly more polished too, with a metallic cast. But not that heavy handed brushed metal stuff; it’s much more subtle. Quite nice – kudos to the Mozilla folks.
One other quick Edgy note: when you upgrade, check and see which kernel it lays down. I was defaulted to the 386 kernel for some reason and lost the use of one core [2] because it’s not SMP-enabled. If that happens to you, just upgrade to the generic kernel as these kind folks advised me and all will be well.
[1] To upgrade, do an ‘apt-get update’, and then an ‘apt-get install firefox’.
[2] To determine how many cores you have running, either a.) run htop if you have it installed (‘apt-get install htop’ if you don’t – it’s worth it), or b.) do a ‘cat /proc/cpuinfo’.
