Umm…What Happened to Fall?

I know the seasons are a bit screwy out here, but this is ridiculous. Three days ago, Alex was celebrating the arrival of fall, and I was certainly enjoying the scenery while fishing up in Keystone yeterday [1]. Checking the forecast in the weather module of my GNOME desktop today, however, I got this:

TONIGHT
SNOW WITH POSSIBLE RAIN AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS IN THE
EVENING
THEN SNOW AFTER MIDNIGHT. COLDER. SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 4
TO 8 INCHES. LOWS IN THE LOWER 30S. NORTH WINDS 10 TO 20 MPH.

COLUMBUS DAY
SNOW. MUCH COLDER. TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 6 TO
12 INCHES. HIGHS IN HE MID 30S. NORTHWEST WINDS 10 TO 15 MPH IN
THE MORNING BECOMING LIGHT.

MONDAY NIGHT
CLOUDY WITH SNOW LIKELY. LIGHT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS.
LOWS IN THE UPPER 20S. CHANCE OF SNOW 60 PERCENT.

I’m no meteorologist, but that has to be the shortest fall ever.

[1] Note to self: fishing with dogs is less than ideal.

  1. I guess you gotta be quick to enjoy fall here in Denver. πŸ˜‰

  2. You turned off the truck too soon and forgot to drive the last 1000 miles. Still near-Summer here in the Bay Area πŸ˜‰

  3. It's pretty nice in West Palm Beach right now. Julie is going to love flying home to the cold on Tuesday. πŸ˜‰

  4. Alex: this might actually be preferable in some geographies. most of New England, for example, views the changing leaves with a mixture of anticipation and dread: the former because of the pretty forests, the latter because of the hordes of tourists. one would imagine that if the season were reduced to three days you'd see less out-of-staters πŸ˜‰

Bill: i dunno; i raised with seasons and came to appreciate them all the more while living in New England. having perfect weather all the time would probably screw me up πŸ˜‰

Matt: well, at least she was flying home Tues. if it was Mon i think she'd be spending a loooong time at the airport πŸ˜‰

  5. Sometimes, I just remember you don't have to comute and I hate you πŸ™‚

  6. jaime: you're definitely entitled, because i'll be sitting here in the home office just watching the snow fall πŸ™‚

  7. its 22 degrees here, which is like 70F, in early october. very weird. so its unseasonably warm

  8. Dude, Fall is so Web 1.0. It's total !

Web 2.0 is all about Summer, Spring, and Winter. Come 3.0, we'll hoprfully cut out Summer. Eventually, it'll just be Old Man Cold and The Pretty Miss.

  9. Ah, welcome to Denver. October storms aren't all that unusual, but then again, nor are 60 degree days in January. So you just can't get too hung up on seasonality; pretty much anything is possible on any given day. (And wait until you see the snow in June — it just comes packed in these nasty ice-balls called "hail".)

  10. It may be snowing now, but unlike New England (snow on ice on rain on snow), it'll be sunny by Wednesday.

I take offense to the "fishing with dogs" comment. I am a damn good fisherman… All that running around left me broken yesterday though. I am almost six years old.

  11. Speaking of weather, I just eard on the news, after one year of water shortage, today was we broke the last 2 years record of rainy days and, tomorrow, a tropical storm will do a near miss in Portugal (first time that this happens since I remember).

  12. Great english wasn't it.
For those requiring a translation of my last comment:
Today rained more in Portugal than any other day during the past 2 years
