I Disdain Top Blogging Lists…Unless I Or Someone I Know is On Them :)

Over the course of the several hundred posts here, I’ve made little attempt to keep my lack of interest in things like the A-list or the Technorati Top 100 a secret. I find them to be of little utility generally, as most of the conversations I’m interested in tracking are further out the Tail from the mainstream musings of the blogging elite.

I was, however, very pleased when Friend of RedMonk Alex King checked in at #104 on the Feedster 500, right behind Jeremy Zawodny and three spots behind Larry Lessig, because it’s great to see the smart folks you know get recognized.

But imagine my surprise when I followed a link from Mini-Microsoft this morning and discovered this. I’m a bit unclear on how I ended up on a Top 100 list given my subject matter, but I appreciate the honor anyhow. Talk about august company; Bray, Mini-Microsoft, Schneier, Udell? All I can think is “I’m not worthy.” Here’s hoping the News.com folks don’t figure that out :)

Anyhow, this might not change my thoughts on the usefulness of these lists, but I’m sure not going to complain about this one.

Update: Forgot to say thanks to the News.com gang, so “Thanks!”

Well if you have disdain for Top 100 lists you sound like you’d love TailRank…

    Stephen,

Congrats on making it on this list. You are being humble :-)

Congrats. It’s very well-deserved. Glad to
see that you are humble about it, too!

Kevin: if you can give me insight into happenings and trends out on the Tail, i will most definitely be interested.

Claire and Ian: thanks, both of you. but while i was raised to be humble, i think that saying there’s a bit of gap between myself and, say, the co-inventor of XML is just me being realistic :)

Good stuff Stephen, and remember - all it takes is one voice!
