SJC, Gate A10

Stealing a page from Ross Mayfield’s indicatr tag in an attempt to quench my thirst for power, I’m going to begin highlighting some of my favorite airport power outlets from my various travels, and will note whether or not they have wifi. Where possible, I’ll try to focus on ones ideal for working, or a bit out of the way, but beggars, as they say, can’t be choosers.

Within Flickr I’ll be using the rather uninspired “power-outlet” tag (I couldn’t bring myself to use “powr”), along with the three letter airport code (SJC, in this case), and “wifi” if it’s available. If you want to join in, be my guest.

Either way, given my travel schedule over the next few months, I expect that shortly you’ll be able to tag surf Flickr and find somewhere to refuel your various devices within several of the major airports. I’ll be sure to include more detailed information on location, etc in the picture itself.

Enjoy.

  1. Portland International is wi-fi, and has Powell's bookstores inside where you can buy used books.

  2. that's Portland, Oregon, correct?

  3. If you travel to other countries, could you let us know what voltage the outlets are? Sometimes even in foreign airports they use American-friendly outlets.

  4. sure can. been a little while since i've been out of the US, however – my colleague is UK based, so he handles most of our european work.

will be sure to note it, however.

  5. If you make sure to tag your photos with city and state names (in the US), they'll show up in Mappr. So you'll be able to easily see where they are.

Here's what you've got so far, tagged with "power-outlet": http://mappr.com/mappr.phtml?user_id=12736444%40N

Only mapped in two locations so far – the one tagged with "orlando" is also tagged with "poweroutlet" instead of "power-outlet": http://flickr.com/photos/12736444@N00/3836228

The rest of your mapped photos are here: http://mappr.com/mappr.phtml?user_id=12736444%40N

  6. hey Eric – that is sweet. i've updated all the entries with city and state info, but apparently it's working off cache b/c the chances haven't reflected yet.

soon as they do, i'll blog it. thanks for the tip – that thing is just awesome.

  7. Sadly, it's true. If you change your tags in flickr, you need to let mappr known that you've changed them. We're an external service, and running through all of flickr's 4,000,000+ photos every two hours is just too much for our little servers to handle.

You need to use the import page to let mappr know that something's changed:
    http://mappr.com/import.phtml

There's also a bookmarklet for this kind of thing at:
    http://mappr.com/about/add.phtml

And some info on how mappr works. We'd love to know if this makes sense – we're finding that as mappr moves out into the world beyond the geek community that these kinds of issues are crucial to communicate – so we're learning what kinds of things are going to be important for people building web services in the future.

    Glad you like it!!
