Control Your Media Player Via Firefox

What’ll they come up with next? For all the focus on what a great product Firefox is – and make no mistake, it is terrific – the real differentiator for me is the community effort to extend its functionality into fascinating new areas. Besides blurring the line between thin and thick clients, they allow for a far richer user experience.

Today’s example? FoxyTunes, which permits one to control iTunes, Windows Media Player, WinAmp and a variety of other media players via a status bar control in Firefox. I’m using it on my Windows box with iTunes, and it works like a champ.

Speaking of the community aspects, however, I think it’d be great for Eclipse to explore this functionality as well. Devs controlling their music player of choice from within the IDE shell? Cool, cool.
