{"id":449,"date":"2005-05-31T11:12:30","date_gmt":"2005-05-31T18:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/sogrady\/wp\/?p=449"},"modified":"2005-05-31T11:12:30","modified_gmt":"2005-05-31T18:12:30","slug":"wikipedia-transitions-to-mono","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/sogrady\/2005\/05\/31\/wikipedia-transitions-to-mono\/","title":{"rendered":"Wikipedia Transitions to Mono"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Intriguing bit of news <strike>today<\/strike> yesterday from Novell&#8217;s Miguel de Icaza, who <a href=\"http:\/\/tirania.org\/blog\/archive\/2005\/May-30.html\">informs us<\/a> that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\">Wikipedia<\/a> (the user written encyclopedia, for the uninitiated &#8211; it&#8217;s a phenomenal resource) has transitioned from <a href=\"http:\/\/gcc.gnu.org\/java\/\">GCJ<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/lucene.apache.org\/java\/docs\/\">Lucene<\/a> to Mono \/ <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/dotlucene\/\">dotLucene<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Things I find interesting about the announcement: <\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The fact that Wikipedia would consider Mono<\/li>\n<li>The fact that, after considering Mono, they migrated from Java<\/li>\n<li>The fact that Mono will scale to Wikipedia type loads (which while not Google like, are considerable)<\/li>\n<li>The fact that Mono 1.1.7 performs that much better than 1.1.6, which in my personal use has been considerably more performant than the 1.0 branch<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The fact that Wikipedia&#8217;s using Lucene or the dotLucene port is not, however, much of a surprise. Having used Lucene locally as part of my Beagle instantiation, I can testify to the fact that if the indexing is this fast on an 866 with 256 MB&#8217;s of RAM, it&#8217;s probably just a bit faster on Wikipedia&#8217;s hardware. <\/p>\n<p>So without making too much of a case study of this &#8211; as Wikipedia&#8217;s technical selection process has little bearing on that of enterprises &#8211; this is an interesting datapoint.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Intriguing bit of news today yesterday from Novell&#8217;s Miguel de Icaza, who informs us that Wikipedia (the user written encyclopedia, for the uninitiated &#8211; it&#8217;s a phenomenal resource) has transitioned from GCJ\/Lucene to Mono \/ dotLucene.
