The person on the line provided their point of view, and began their argument with, \u201c<strong>The logical solutions<\/strong> are to &lt;insert their very specific architectural opinions&gt;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What I heard was, \u201c<strong>Theological solutions<\/strong> are to &lt;insert their very specific architectural opinions&gt;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It took me about a minute to realize I misheard them.<\/p>\n<p>I love that this is an industry where:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>people\u2019s opinions about infrastructure and architectural approaches can reasonably be interpreted as being religiously held, and<\/li>\n<li>someone can think they\u2019ve framed their argument entirely rationally while their conversational partner can hear their argument as a zealous opinion; all of this confusion can happen without the misunderstanding being immediately apparent or notable to either party.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In technology sometimes there is a fine line between what we know and what we believe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/rstephens\/files\/2019\/11\/427px-Portrait_of_retired_statesman_studying_theology_4672276.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/rstephens\/files\/2019\/11\/427px-Portrait_of_retired_statesman_studying_theology_4672276.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of retired statesman studying theology\" width=\"427\" height=\"599\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-497\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Image Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Portrait_of_retired_statesman_studying_theology_(4672276).jpg\">Wikimedia<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was on a call with a vendor who was exploring possible approaches to a problem space.
