{"id":174,"date":"2020-05-01T11:40:44","date_gmt":"2020-05-01T15:40:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/?p=174"},"modified":"2020-05-01T11:40:44","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T15:40:44","slug":"an-observability-platform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/2020\/05\/01\/an-observability-platform\/","title":{"rendered":"An Observability Platform, Serverless, and the Smoking Goat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As my colleague James notes in his piece on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2020\/02\/05\/reframing-and-retooling-for-observability\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reframing and Retooling for Observability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, New Relic made a clear shift into the observability space with its launch of New Relic One:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September last year New Relic put down a marker that it plans to compete in the market for Observability tools, announcing the New Relic One platform, with an aggressive throw down against newer market entrants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the weeks before a pandemic made such things impossible, James had the opportunity to sit down at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/smokinggoatbar.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking Goat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;his favourite (UK spelling intentional) restaurant&#8211;and muse about observability more generally in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/videos\/oi-talking-observability-at-the-smoking-goat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this Opinionated Infrastructure video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding New Relic One in particular, my colleague Rachel and I had a chance to speak with various folks at New Relic and dig a bit deeper into the platform per se (and its characterization as an &#8220;observability platform&#8221;); we have also been keeping tabs on New Relic\u2019s activity in the serverless observability space.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Relic One as Observability Platform<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rachel and I formatted our conversations about New Relic One as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2017\/07\/14\/what-ishow-to-introducing-a-new-redmonk-video-format\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is\/How to videos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since the earlier post (and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Nc_T0iDzJpM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">related video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) came out, we\u2019ve seen some additional serverless observability movement from New Relic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February 2020 New Relic published <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newrelic.com\/resources\/ebooks\/serverless-benchmark-report-aws-lambda-2020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Love of Serverless<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 AWS Lambda Benchmark Report for Developers, DevOps, and Decision Makers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which they summarize as follows:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Relic One processes trillions of serverless events across the globe. For this report, we\u2019ve aggregated and analyzed the same sample set over time to call out key trends that help serverless users make knowledge-based decisions about their architecture and performance goals to ultimately build better software.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report captures data from a very precise intersection of AWS Lambda and New Relic users, and is worth a look especially for adoption findings around timelines and runtimes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the findings are not surprising, such as Node.js and Python topping the \u201cLambda Adoption by Runtime\u201d ranking by percentage of all <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">functions<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> monitored (and this matched similar language usage statistics for AWS Lambda in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.datadoghq.com\/state-of-serverless\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The State of Serverless<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report that Datadog published a few weeks prior to the New Relic report).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lambda Adoption by Runtime, July-December 2019 (source: New Relic, 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/newrelic.com\/resources\/ebooks\/serverless-benchmark-report-aws-lambda-2020\">For the Love of Serverless<\/a> report)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-176 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/files\/2020\/05\/lambda-adoption-runtime-1024x703.jpg\" alt=\"Lambda Adoption by Runtime, July-December 2019 (source: New Relic, 2020 For the Love of Serverless report)\" width=\"1024\" height=\"703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/files\/2020\/05\/lambda-adoption-runtime-1024x703.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/files\/2020\/05\/lambda-adoption-runtime-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/files\/2020\/05\/lambda-adoption-runtime-768x527.jpg 768w, https:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/files\/2020\/05\/lambda-adoption-runtime-480x329.jpg 480w, https:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/files\/2020\/05\/lambda-adoption-runtime-914x627.jpg 914w, https:\/\/redmonk.com\/kfitzpatrick\/files\/2020\/05\/lambda-adoption-runtime.jpg 1119w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Lambda Adoption by Runtime, July-December 2019 (source: New Relic, 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/newrelic.com\/resources\/ebooks\/serverless-benchmark-report-aws-lambda-2020\">For the Love of Serverless<\/a> report)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, I found it interesting to see Java (third in percentage of all functions monitored in both the New Relic and Datadog reports) jump ahead of Python in percentage of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invocations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> monitored; the New Relic report suggests that this may be partially attributed to the \u201clift and shift\u201d of extant java applications (the Datadog report does not capture invocation metrics).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recently (as in yesterday morning), New Relic was represented in the innovative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/desertedislanddevops.com\/agenda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Desert Island DevOps conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/rstephens\/2020\/04\/30\/deserted-island-devops\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as Rachel has written about<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, took place in a Nintendo Switch game, was streamed live on Twitch, and had 11k+ viewers tune in throughout the day.
