While Steve talked about some of our best <a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/sogrady\/2012\/12\/02\/ten\/\">predictions<\/a>, I&#8217;m going to talk about\u00a0some of what I see as RedMonk&#8217;s <strong>foundational works<\/strong>, which continue to<strong>\u00a0define our philosophy and approach<\/strong>\u00a0today.<\/p>\n<p>To collate this list, I&#8217;ve read everything that everyone at RedMonk has ever published. IT marketing and the software cookbook<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0on the\u00a0<strong>corporate creation of new in-house technologies<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/sogrady\/2010\/05\/28\/future-of-development-differentiation\/\">differentiating on top<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/sogrady\/2010\/01\/12\/roll-your-own\/\">follow-up<\/a>\u00a0by Steve six years later applying this to open source [e.g. Hadoop, Cassandra]).<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2004\/11\/02\/microsoft-matures-as-ibm-once-did\/\">Microsoft matures as IBM once did<\/a>&#8221; on the value of <strong>long-term, senior engineers<\/strong> (i.e. 20-30 years experience, not 20-30 years old)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2004\/12\/22\/nice-to-see-linus-is-flawed-as-the-rest-of-us\/\">Nice to see Linus is as flawed as the rest of us<\/a>&#8221; observes that <strong>Not-Invented-Here (NIH) syndrome<\/strong> is not exclusive to proprietary software.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2004\/12\/15\/swainson-early-days-but-signs-are-good\/\">Swainson: Early days but signs are good<\/a>&#8221; explaining how <strong>marketing often trumps technical prowess<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2004\/12\/06\/on-attestation-transparency-microsoft-internal-choices-and-the-future-of-market-research\/\">On attestation, transparency, Microsoft internal choices and the future of market research<\/a>&#8221; on the <strong>need for business models<\/strong> in\u00a0Web startups.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2005\/02\/11\/open-source-community-is-just-muddled-thinking\/\">&#8216;Open source community&#8217; is just muddled thinking<\/a>&#8221; on the <strong>heterogeneity of open-source communities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2005\/02\/04\/enterprises-and-consumers-dont-buy-things-they-subscribe-to-services\/\">Enterprises and consumers don&#8217;t buy things, they subscribe to things<\/a>&#8221; on the coming <strong>service-based economy<\/strong> &#8212; a precursor to IaaS, API management, etc.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2005\/03\/09\/wake-up-to-the-long-tail-of-passion-and-plug-ins\/\">Wake up to the long tail of passion and plug-ins<\/a>&#8221; on <strong>the value of extensibility in attracting a community<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2005\/05\/31\/note-to-world-there-is-money-in-commodities\/\">Note to world: There is money in commodities<\/a>&#8221; explains that <strong>commoditization does not force anyone up the stack<\/strong> if there&#8217;s other value they can provide at that level, such as <strong>brand<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/jgovernor\/2005\/05\/23\/ibm-to-google-come-eat-our-lunch\/\">IBM to Google: Come eat our lunch?<\/a>&#8221; on breaking down your software into component <strong>building blocks<\/strong>.
