{"id":3900,"date":"2010-01-11T17:42:21","date_gmt":"2010-01-11T23:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.redmonk.com\/cote\/?p=3900"},"modified":"2010-01-11T17:42:21","modified_gmt":"2010-01-11T23:42:21","slug":"links-for-january-11th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/cote\/2010\/01\/11\/links-for-january-11th\/","title":{"rendered":"Links for January 11th"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A little something extra&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve noticed people using the phrase &#8220;commodity hardware&#8221; a lot recently. While &#8220;insiders&#8221; may know what this means, what&#8217;s more important is clearly spelling out the intention of what you&#8217;re getting at when you use that phrase. It&#8217;s almost like using the phrase &#8220;open source&#8221; without explaining why that matters: it both leaves it too vague and open to, perhaps, unhelpful conclusions and generalizations.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, I find people mean a handful of things when they use &#8220;commodity hardware&#8221;:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cheap &#8211; or &#8220;affordable&#8221; if you prefer.<\/li>\n<li>Flexible &#8211; because it&#8217;s general purpose, it can be morphed into other needs and evolved.<\/li>\n<li>Scale-out &#8211; rather than relying on high performance processors (or storage), etc., you just &#8220;throw more hardware&#8221; at it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are others, to be sure, but those seem to be them.
