That said, here is the stated goal of the project:

The mission of the proposed COSMOS Project (COmmunity Systems
Management Open Source) is to create a standard tools platform upon
which software developers can create inter-operable system management
tools and plug-ins.

So I ask, does the previous statement hold true? Share your feelings
on this list. Do you think the OMC should be involved? Should
individual projects like Nagios? Also, what about projects like
openNMS that while not affiliated with the OMC obviously have a
leading market position and very relevant project to this new project?
Also, if this project is so important, and needs to be open source,
how come none of the companies involved strongly with open source
projects?

While that may seem a bit glum, my money is on the two groups resolving the issue. Or, if not, clarifying what the role of each is. The only negative outcome would be the low hum or nothing…and then it’s back to SNMP and MIBs ;>

(Credit to The Octopus Project for the title and, really, a good soundtrack for standards sausage making.)

Disclaimer: Eclipse, “in” COSMOS is a proposed project, is a client.

Tags: cosmos, eclipse, omc, standards, vendorsports

This post/email from whurley and thread from the OMC discuss list is worth taking a look at for COSMOS folks and people interested in the sausage making of standards.
