{"id":299,"date":"2006-08-11T13:19:45","date_gmt":"2006-08-11T20:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.redmonk.com\/cote\/wp\/?p=299"},"modified":"2006-08-11T13:19:45","modified_gmt":"2006-08-11T20:19:45","slug":"wheres-the-hosting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/redmonk.com\/cote\/2006\/08\/11\/wheres-the-hosting\/","title":{"rendered":"Where&#039;s the Hosting?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I went comment trolling &#8212; looking at old, interesting posts on blogs to see if there were new comments &#8212; a bit this morning and found <a href=\"http:\/\/ianmurdock.com\/?p=345#comment-738\">this great plea-comment from Stephen Hood asking why &#8220;doesn&#8217;t host Domino\/Notes on a large scale&#8221;?<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/ianmurdock.com\">Ian Murdock&#8217;s blog<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nWhy IBM doesn&#8217;t host Domino\/Notes on a large scale is beyond me. It&#8217;s not like they don&#8217;t have the hardware to do it. Given the potential market it would be a very &#8220;cheap&#8221; investment.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed, we often wonder and suggest that ourselves, and not just with IBM. Hopefully it&#8217;s clear that, in general, RedMonk is big on hosted\/SaaS deployment models. Speaking for myself, among the popular reasons, I&#8217;m enamored of those models because they allow the vendor (or &#8220;software provider&#8221;) to release <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmonk.com\/cote\/archives\/2006\/05\/rebellion_in_ag.html\">more frequent updates<\/a> than the current <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmonk.com\/cote\/archives\/2006\/03\/big_bangs_can_c.html\">&#8220;big-bang&#8221; release cycles<\/a>, giving their customers and users quicker access to new features. That said, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmonk.com\/cote\/archives\/2006\/08\/spiceworks_upda.html\">Spiceworks showed earlier this week<\/a> (as have many other apps) that you can do rapid released on packaged apps as well.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, for the vendors, moving from a packaged culture of software development to the hosted culture is a huge leap. I know: I wouldn&#8217;t think so either, but all my experience and conversations point to that being the case.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, back to Stephen&#8217;s questioning out-loud. When looking for more info on IBM&#8217;s hosting plans in response to Stephen&#8217;s comment, I came across <a href=\"http:\/\/andypiper.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/08\/lotus-is-opening-a-greenhouse\/\">this post<\/a> (looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/andypiper.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/08\/lotus-is-opening-a-greenhouse\/#comment-584\">James found it as well<\/a>) which points <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elsua.net\/2006\/06\/08\/dogear-a-unique-tool-for-organizing-and-sharing-information\/\">to this post<\/a> that looks like they&#8217;d be a good answers to Stephen&#8217;s questions.
