Here are some, organized and curated as carefully as all the crap on my desk:<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/hbdm.harvardbusiness.org\/email\/archive\/dailystat.php?date=071709\">Netbook Shock<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\n  <b>60% of netbook purchasers expect them to have the same functionality as notebook computers<\/b>, according to recent market research by the NPD group. That misperception leads to disappointment; <b>only 58% of purchasers surveyed were very satisfied with their netbooks. 60% of those who bought netbooks said they did so primarily because of the device&#8217;s portability<\/b>, but exactly the same percentage said they never took their netbooks anywhere.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/redmonk.com\/sogrady\/2009\/07\/21\/links-for-2009-07-21\/\">Stephen O&#8217;Grady<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Adobe Industry Analyst Summit<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;m at the Adobe Industry Analyst Summit this week (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmonk.com\/cote\/2009\/07\/21\/adobe09_morning01\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redmonk.com\/cote\/2009\/07\/22\/adobe09_afternoon01\/\">here<\/a> so far for my highlights and commentary), always lots of numbers there:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>[Adobe] CEO [Shantanu] Narayen: <b>sales of &gt;$50K are the fastest growing segment of the business<\/b>, including bulk licensing of creative tools <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/billtrippe\/status\/2759927251\">(via @billtrippe<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Also from Shantanu: &#8220;What&#8217;s <b>Adobe&#8217;s enterprise strategy? It is a $1bn business<\/b>. the fastest growing part of the business&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/monkchips\/statuses\/2759951885\">(via @monkchips<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Enterprise Marketing VP John Knightly sees <b>the addressable market for enterprise (LiveCycle?) as $2.8B today<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/billtrippe\/statuses\/2766215629\">via @billtrippe<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Enterprise Marketing VP John Knightly: <b>250 deals in the last six months, with 25 of those greater than $500K<\/b> (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/billtrippe\/statuses\/2766451931\">via @billtrippe<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2009\/07\/20\/apple-estimated-to-account-for-20-of-cellphone-industry-profit\/\">Smart Profits<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\n  <b>Apple and Research in Motion together accounted for approximately 38% of the cellphone industry&#8217;s total operating profit in 2008<\/b> while only <b>representing 3% of total unit sales<\/b>. <b>Apple&#8217;s<\/b> <b>share of industry profits clocked in at approximately 20% while holding only just over 1%<\/b> of the unit market share.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If I read this, it means us consumers are paying a fat margin (over-paying so the company makes more profit) on &#8220;smart phones,&#8221; hence the creation of so much profit vs. the razor-thin margins on &#8220;dumb phones&#8221;&#8230;right?<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.web2asia.com\/2009\/07\/17\/q2-2009-china-internet-statistics-report-released\/\">China Online<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li>The Number of <b>Chinese Netizens increased by over 40 Mil during the first half of 2009, representing a 13.4% growth rate compared to 2008<\/b>. By June 30 2009 the <b>total number of Chinese Internet Users has reached 338 Million, which represents a penetration rate of 25.5%<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>320<\/b> <b>Mil (or 94.3%) of all online users have broadband<\/b> access<\/li>\n<li><b>155 Mil (or 45.9% of all netizens) use their mobile devices to go online<\/b>. In the first half of 2009 t<b>his number increased by 37 Mil. 28% of these Mobile Internet Users are considering to use 3G<\/b> in the second half of 2009.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2009\/07\/17\/how-google-made-its-q2-numbers-squeezing-expenses\/\">The Google Billions<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Google made its <a href=\"http:\/\/investor.google.com\/releases\/2009Q2_google_earnings.html\">earnings<\/a> numbers yesterday, actually coming in above <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2009\/07\/14\/cheat-sheet-for-googs-second-quarter-earnings-later-this-week\/\">expectations<\/a>. Total <b>revenues were $5.5 billion, 3 percent above the same period last year and flat with the first quarter<\/b> (when sequential revenues <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2009\/04\/16\/google-shows-a-3-sequential-dip-in-revenues-first-one-ever\/\">actually declined<\/a>). <b>Net revenues<\/b>, which are the revenues which actually go to Google after they pay off AdSense and AdWords partner sites via traffic acquisition costs (TAC), <b>came in at $4.07 billion<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.itwriting.com\/blog\/1635-windows-7-will-build-the-global-it-economy-says-idcmicrosoft-or-will-the-cloud-kill-it.html\">Windows 7, The Economic Jesus OS<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Microsoft has sponsored an IDC report on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/presspass\/events\/wwpc\/docs\/win7_worldwide.pdf\">economic impact of Windows 7<\/a> [pdf]. Among the claims:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For every dollar of Microsoft revenue from launch in October 2009 to the end of 2010 from Windows 7, <b>the ecosystem beyond Microsoft will reap $18.52<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li><b>19% of the global IT workforce will be working with Windows 7 by the end of 2010<\/b><\/li>\n<li>IDC expects that <b>employment related to client operating systems will grow by more than 300,000 new jobs or more than 30% of total growth in global IT employment in 2010<\/b> solely because of the launch of Windows 7<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is also <b>a forecast that shows Windows 7 taking the majority of Windows client sales in 2010<\/b>, and which appears to assume that Windows 8 will not be available before 2014.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statesman.com\/blogs\/content\/shared-gen\/blogs\/austin\/theticker\/entries\/2009\/07\/14\/dell_sees_computer_rebound_in.html?cxntfid=blogs_statesman_business_blog\">Dell seems to like the idea<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe think a refresh (of hardware sales) is possible in 2010; personal computers will be later than servers and storage,\u201d Michael Dell said. \u201cI think a lot is going to depend on the overall economy and the economic condition for any given company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he added, \u201cWe are engaged right now with a lot of companies\u201d that are planning to start replacing their older computers \u201caround the end of the year and going into 2010.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Analysts using Twitter<\/h2>\n<p class=\"pic\"><a href=\"http:\/\/technobabble2dot0.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/14\/the-growth-of-twitter-with-analysts\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cote-media.redmonk.com\/cote\/files\/2012\/06\/200907221031-tm.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"307\" alt=\"200907221031.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the always interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/technobabble2dot0.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/14\/the-growth-of-twitter-with-analysts\/\">Jonny Bentwood &amp;co.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.facebook.com\/blog.php?post=106860717130\">Facebook, Quarter Billion Edition<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>As of today, <b>250 million people are using Facebook<\/b> to stay updated on what&#8217;s happening around them and share with the people in their lives.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>For comparison, see <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Aol_subscribers_Q201-Q407.png\">this chart of AOL subscribers between 2001 and 2008<\/a>. And, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AOL\">as wikipedia puts it<\/a>: &#8220;[a]t its zenith, <b>AOL&#8217;s membership was over 30 million members worldwide<\/b>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB124784696163158721.html\">Cold Water on dot-whatever-we&#8217;re-calling-it Investments<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The days of <b>infinite margins<\/b>, <b>1,000% productivity gains, and growth of market throughout the universe are long over<\/b>. Internet companies now should be treated, at best, like <b>utility companies that get bought at about 10 times earnings and sold at 13 times earnings<\/b>. Even then, I&#8217;m not sure I would give the Internet sector the same respect as the monopoly-protected utility sector.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prweb.com\/releases\/AppceleratorTitanium\/Mobile\/prweb2647854.htm\">Appcelerator Momentum<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>[J]ust one month after the beta release of its flagship <b>Appcelerator Titanium platform &#8211; it has signed up 3,000 new developers<\/b>, who are creating a variety of applications for the iPhone and Android mobile devices&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>The top three categories in Appcelerator&#8217;s pipeline include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Utilities &#8211; (15%)<\/b>: including server monitoring, home management, budgeting, and barcode scanning applications<\/li>\n<li><b>Business &#8211; (14%)<\/b>: including mobile ports of existing SaaS-based enterprise apps, ERP, CRM, and onsite billing\/quoting\/invoicing applications<\/li>\n<li><b>Social Networking &#8211; (10%)<\/b>: including social aggregation, friend finder, job\/employment, and Twitter applications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.statesman.com\/blogs\/content\/shared-gen\/blogs\/austin\/theticker\/entries\/2009\/07\/14\/austin_moves_up_in_job_market.html?cxntfid=blogs_statesman_business_blog\">Jobs in Austin<\/a><\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Austin <b>had 56 job postings per 1,000 residents in the second quarter, making it the fourth healthiest big-city job market in the country<\/b>, the company said. That was up from a seventh-place ranking in the first quarter.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On a personal, anecdotal note, a handful of tech-world folks I know who&#8217;ve been searching for employment have recently found some.
