As an update, I decided to change the GreenMonk blog theme last week away from Thesis.

After trying out a couple of alternative GPL licensed theme, I have settled for Carrington Blog.

I realise that Thesis is mostly GPL licensed now but I'd prefer GreenMonk support a more enthusiastic embracer of GPL.

[...] The #thesiswp Controversy: WordPress, Themes and the GPL There are really only two interesting questions here as far as I’m concerned. Does Thesis have the right to not adhere to the terms of the GPL? And independent of that question, does it make business sense for them to not adhere to the license? [...]

Good discussion.

We keep deferring to the lawyers and the judges though and, based on the decisions I've watched them deliver on technology issues over the years, I think they know a heck of a lot less about this stuff than they should.

Would also like to repeat a great point made by Mullenweg (who, by the way, seems to be a classy guy.. I was very impressed by his responses). There are lots and lots and lots of designers and developers using Wordpress to create themes for the marketplace. Chris Pearson seems to be the "only one" who is unhappy with the GPL license. One doesn't have to be very familiar with legal ins and outs of software licensing law to sense that Pearson isn't passing the smell test here.
