"Google is still authoring aggressively operating system independent services"

Its the Entry point to the market. For MSFT, having a strong OS and integrated apps was the Critical Success Factor. For Google, The Integrated Apps is achieved via the web standards, and hence having a non-core independent OS strategy is fine.

i tend to think fakestevejobs makes a great point about OEMs.

MS explicitly wants to drive up the unit price of a netbook, to make a margin. ChromeOS will help OEMs stick it to MS in negotiations.

Is google pioneering Domain specific distros?

Stephen - your point about performance talks to a new trend in laptops and netbooks- fastboot using Linux. The less OEMs rely on MS, the better for Google. http://www.redmonk.com/jgovernor/2004/08/27/hp-free-to-invent/

That is I see ChromeOS as tactical. When we see the bits I can reassess that.

Steve,

Good post, though unusally prolix.

Here's my net.

Desktop Linux is a myth. I used to run Ubuntu/Gnome, and now run Ubuntu/KDE.
But it doesn't really matter, since the browser *is* the desktop. When I log in I start up my editor and a browser, and spend the rest of my day for the most part alternating between the two. Unix/Linux is all about the command line.

Think about it. When you have your browser filling up the screen, do you know, or even care, what "desktop" is underneath. I find KDE more pleasant, but could also use Gnome. This is a non-issue.

This effort will only succeed if Google opens it up to the maximal extent. That is the sine qua non of any successful distro.

Re Android, Apple, Google and Palm have missed the most obvious point.

The key to success in the cellphone/mobile market is to enlist the open-source community as *the* key strategic partner. The first to do that will dominate the market. It's amazing that no one has yet made this leap. Apple never will. Google is too tentative Goo is a media company, NOT a technology company.

I have tried to reach out to Palm to make this point, but have as yet received no response, so the opportunity remains.

thanks,dave
