SSD is only marginally faster than hard drives. I'm not sure that designing for them is the best move. Hard drive space has been increasing at approximately the same speed as SSD drives. Hard drive speed has been going up too.

While I would agree that SSD drives are within the 3 to 5 year future of common laptops, they are probably out much further for database servers.

I was misinformed: from the Drizzle FAQ: "We support both 32bit and 64bit but the class of machine we are targetting is 64bit. We are making design decisions which assume very large amounts of RAM will be made available to the DB." RAM is the new disk, and it's hard to argue at $US70 for 4GB of ECC Registered DDR2 (ie server RAM).

Curtis: ah, I wasn't aware that they'd released 64bit options. You do pay 4x as much for a 64bit EC2 instance, but you also get 4x the RAM (which is what Drizzle really wants) and CPU.

There's an argument over 32bit vs 64bit at LWN (in an article about Flash 10).

@James, EC2 does support 64 bit on their Large Instances, but I agree that for the vast majority of people who are running on small instances, not being 32 bit may be troublesome

@James: good pushback, but while i can't speak for Drizzle, obviously, i think it's aimed more at where EC2 et al are going than where they are now.

As someone else (I forget who) pointed out, 64bit is a bit stupid when Amazon EC2 is 32bit only.
