In the supply chain of PC technology

x86 is Intel and OS is Microsoft - both monopolies.

yes - the PC manufacturer is not and x86 server is not. 

Monopoly is directly proportional to success of a proprietary component in the supply chain. tt is not possible to monopolize a full industry(meaning the supply chain)


So - if I look at Cloud Computing as an industry in this way. it could be that - webscale DB could end up being monopolized by Google.  The Programming model could be monopolized by Sun(Project Caroline) and that Hosting could be Amazon. But I doubt if there will be just one player for the industry. 

Also : do not discount the fact that you will most certainly have corporate datacenters operating in a cloud compyting paradigm .</description>
