I used to have a problem with slow SMS loading on my N80 and N95, there were a few things which can be done to help:

Install SMS Accelerator – I can’t find anything about using it on a N75, but it may work
http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/software/Nokia_N80_sms_accelerator.sis

Change how long logs are saved from 30 to 1 or 10 days
Log -> Settings -> Log Duration

Cut down the number of sent messages and messages stored in the inbox, after a few thousand I noticed some big slowdowns.

I’ll be interested to see your objective review of your new iPhone. While many of those around me are going the iPhone route I’ve resisted and in fact went with a BlackBerry Curve recently that I really like. Perhaps I’ll take the iPhone plunge when the 3G model comes out in 2008.
