Could you elaborate on how the Google's import tool that you've used could have migrated your users' calendars?

AFAICT from google's own documentation about their "IMAP mail migration" tool for Google Apps, they advice to explicitly exclude the exhange calendar folders from migration, claiming that otherwise the calendar events will end up as regular email in the Google Apps accounts.

No reference to any other means by which calendars will get migrated en-bulk is made there, nor do I seem to be able to find much on the subject elsewhere.

Before visiting your site, just finished reviewing the blog of a family that moved from Google Apps to Zimbra.... led me to a number of illustrated blog entries comparing Zimbra vs. Google's. Have you had any second thoughts at this point about Zimbra?

[...] Google Apps takes what they learned from managing very large scale services and applied it to micro businesses. You can read of a growing number of micro businesses - consulting firms, start-ups, entrepreneurs, etc. - are “outsourcing” to Google. Redmonk’s Stephen O’Grady writes a good reference point. [...]

DISCLAIMER: Our company is a Zimbra hosting company (but not the one previously used by RedMonks).

There are a few solutions to the issues you were experiencing with Zimbra.

SMS Notifications: This can easily be done in the preference panel for the individual user account by the user himself or an admin. It's under Options --> Mail --> Enable address for new mail notifications.

Mobile Access: Right or wrong, Zimbra has chosen to focus on utilizing the native mobile clients rather than mobile browsers for access. Their simple web client does work but does not include calendar. Out of curiosity, did you try Zimbra Mobile - http://www.zimbra.com/products/zimbra_mobile.html ?

SPAM: I wholeheartedly agree that the spam filtering in Zimbra is not sufficient, especially when compared to Gmail, Postini, and a few others.

Free/Busy: It's there... kinda, but just buried under setting up an appointment. Too clunky unless you use the Outlook plugin which brings it front-and-center.

Hope this information helps if you ever play with Zimbra again.

Cheers,
 Matthew
