Google Gears currently doesn't work 100% offline, because the application needs to be already loaded in the browser.

But Gears does solve the problem of not losing your work while disconnected.

Clarity on a couple of points in the article:
* The LocalServer is not a web server at all. It hooks the browser's network stack and feeds the data back to the browser directly. There is no Apache running, no http connection, etc.
* Gears uses the browser's JS interpreter, as you guessed.

<blockquote>Alex once joked that we’d solve the offline problem just in time for it to be made obsolete by ubiquitous connectivity.</blockquote>

Actually, I'm not sure how much joking there was in there. I'm definitely interested in checking out the forthcoming toolkits, but it's a tough choice to choose to build offline functionality for a web app that basically only benefits road warriors vs. building functionality that benefits all customers. Until it's fairly trivial and works on all major browsers, etc. I probably won't be adding it to my products.

If Web 3.0 is about synchronization, it's basically about putting everything into a DSCM.

@Tom: I tend to disagree with you on that. While Google is an extremely good innovator, they also have a pretty decent track record of delivering products to market. I think Gears is something that will take them head-on against market leaders in other sectors, so this should be really interesting to watch

The Mozilla foundation is stripping RDF support from their platform. It strikes me that something more web'esque than SQL would be the way forward for the future.
