Luis: no problem on the steven thing - everyone does it, so it doesn't faze me one way or another. as for the iGo, that's good to know. i suspect it'd still make sense in my case, but i actually might see if i can find one in a retail outlet to make sure.

as for NYC bars, will absolutely ping you next time i'm down. should be late August, i think. i don't know if it's still the official Sox hangout, but a lot of fans used to watch games at the Riviera - might be worth a scouting trip.

Aurynn: thanks so much for the note. i've actually cut over to Ubuntu now and i'm pretty sure they're running the i810 drivers which work ok with xGL (never did get AIGLX working with it). will have to see when i'll get time to drop xGL on the new box.

The generic VESA drivers are, fwiw, completely un-accelerated. From what I understand of AIGLX and xGL architecture, you won't be able to use them.

Gah, and apologies for steven->stephen. One caveat I forgot to mention: the iGo is substantially heavier than the stock IBM brick. It only works out weight-wise if you're carrying around a number of devices. Should be fine in your case (one brick instead of two) but thought it might be good to document for future readers.

As for buying both... I'm about to become an impoverished student again, remember? :) By the way, drop me a note next time you're in NYC and need to find a Sox bar- I'll be investigating that problem as soon as I hit the City.

scristian: hahaha - the distro whose color choices are brown and orange will fix it ;)

Luis: thx for the recommendations. i've seen the iGo before, and have actually considered getting them but never had any personal feedback on them. much appreciated. far as the international travel, your read is accurate: apart from the occasional trip, that's more James' province than mine.

as for the tablet, why not get both? ;)

Mark: this thing is likely to inspire many such comments. it's unbelievable.

Steven: I got an iGo (igo.com) about a year ago, and definitely recommend it to everyone I know with multiple devices and a heavy travel schedule. Would mean carrying one extra tip instead of one extra power block. I get the impression you don't do a whole lot of international travel (might be wrong there?); if I'm wrong, I totally recommend the Kensington International Adapter: http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=kensington+international+plug+adapter
in combo with the iGo for a totally flexible international power solution.

Oh, and this was recommended by a friend as a way to steal power even in the direst situations:
http://yourmobiledesk.com/products/proddetail.cfm?prodID=5576&catID=224&subcatID=1822&sscatID=na&mfrID=na

Anyway, good luck with the x60s- I'm thinking I'm going to hold out for the rumored x60 tablet for the moment. :)

The x60s comes in a typically uninspiring brown box.
An Ubuntu logo should fix it. :P
