I don't know about banshee, as I have never used it, but Gtkpod can change where the mount point is. I use Gtkpod for most of my ipod needs, but I don't think I will fully switch over to it from iTunes till the 1.0 version (which is very soon)

I myself have fully converted to Linux full time. Although, I keep a Win-Lappy handy for work. I too just happened to plug my ipod into my Dapper box to charge it. Also to my surprise, it mounted and I was able to R/W. The Linux desktop has come a long way in the last couple of years. I expect it to only get better with driver support, and software selection. (Same steady progression)
I believe that if someone has basic needs from a computer (as most new users do), such as email, im, web surfing, listing to music, etc. The Linux desktop is more than ready. I have set up over 10 boxes with Ubuntu. Not one person has called about a problem, or how to.. As a matter of fact, one friend who is not too savvy had connected his car stereo (detachable face) to his Linux box, and was able to copy all his mp3s on to it.. It showed up as a portable storage device, icon and all..

How far a stretch of fair use is it, to download a song you have purchased rights to (say from itunes) from p2p nets?

I am migrating my 250+ CD collection currently to external drive held .flac. I don't let the fact that an stray foot of a child snapped on of my archived c's in half, stop me from listening to my backed up copy on my computer.

I maintain all my original CD's simply as proof of purchase. Never use the blasted things.

I've even got one or two discs marred beyond use that i'll be trying to find .flac copies of, or a disc i can borrow to recreate it. Meanwhile, broken disc is kept with all the others.
