billsaysthis: interesting, and thanks for the clarification. that contradicts what i was told at the time and have had validated several times subsequently, but you're in a position to know.

Cote: a closer relationship b/twn Sun and Genuitec is definitely a good thing, IMO. maybe they can be a bridge between the two factions.

I, of course, couldn't agree more about Eclipse. Along those lines, how about a closer Sun alliance/relationship with Genuitec, perhaps even a name change from MyEclipse to SunEclipse.

That'd be wild, but in a good way.

"when the application server was a mishmash of Kiva, NetDynamics and Netscape code"

This is factually incorrect but as the NetD tech support manager and then the iAS product manager I'll try and clarify. To start, Kiva was acquired by Netscape and became the Netscape Application Server. Second, when iPlanet came about and the two products were in the same org the executives (after nearly a year of painful indecision, acutely felt by the team I was managing) chose Netscape as the code base for the iPlanet Application Server.

The idea of combining the best bits of code from each was tossed in the air by management but let's just say that was never going to happen. The only thing that was a mess was the management and one reason I am still pessimistic about Sun is that quite a few of those men are still in key roles while lots of good smart but less politically adept people were RIFfed.

(Sorry if this comment gets duped.)
