I have been meaning to lay out an argument since the recent Sun analyst conference, which we covered pretty extensively here, here, and um, here.&#160;The basic argument is that Sun would do well to build a new team tasked with...

<description>James: have gotten varying opinions, but the most common has been - 'interesting, but will wait and see'

murphee: not sure if i'm actually wrong here - the page does say "in progress," and JSR 270 states the following above the scripting for the java platform link: 'The following JSRs are being considered for inclusion as components of the Mustang Umbrella JSR.'

i wouldn't be surprised to see it be included, but the fact of the matter is that the JSR's been in flight for a long, long time and is not in common use today.</description>

<description>About JSR223: You're wrong about it's state: it will be added to Java 6, which will be out in 2006.
See the Mustang (codename for Java 6) JSR:
http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=270
where it's listed as a part.

Java 6 will also come with a default scripting environment for Ecmascript (I think it's a version of Rhino, as Java based Ecmascript implementation). Other JVM based language implementations are already working on JSR223 adapters (Beanshell, for example).

If you're still not convinced, check out
a current pre-release version of a Mustang build which already ships with this:
