Commercial database vendors face the prospect of companies developing against free MySQL, and then when high end features are required, they would just go to a commercial vendor to buy clustering and failover for MySQL, in preference over redeveloping and retesting against Oracle.

The challenge for Oracle now? To do something with Innodb so that they can layer Oracle's syntax in front of it, so that developers can write and test against it, knowing that the codebase is mature, and then persuading people who need high end features to move seamlessly to Oracle servers.</description>
