One of the things I’ve come to learn about Colorado over the years I’ve been visiting is that the weather is, to put it kindly, a bit volatile. Mark Twain once observed of the region I used to call home, “If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes.” But it seems to me, having lived here full time now for about six months, that that description is far more applicable to Denver than it ever was to my former home. While I attended more than a few games at Fenway that ended up being either dramatically colder or warmer than expected (I got burnt to a crisp in October), Denver takes this to an entirely different level. Despite temperatures in the 80’s down in Denver, when I took the inset picture on a fishing trip to Lake Mitchell, I was freezing in shorts and a t-shirt in high 50’s / low 60’s temps.
This variability was driven home yet again to me today. Over the course of a Southwest salad and a couple of waters at the Handlebar and Grill, where I’d fled to get caught up on some of my email, the temperature dropped by nearly 10 degrees, the winds picked up by about 20 miles an hour, and it began raining sideways.
I don’t know that I really have a preference between the consistently bad weather in New England and the schizophrenically good weather here in Denver, but there’s something to be said for knowing what to wear. Or maybe I should take everyone’s advice and stop wearing flip-flops 8 months a year 🙂
