Eduardo: i don't know. while C# was certainly intended as an alternative to Java, i don't think i'd contend that it was pitched as a wholesale replacement of same. Java was and is likely to be around for a long while, and as such this is a natural move.

i do agree, however, that i think it's very possible MS may feel compelled at some point to ship support for the ODF.

Well, it may not be an immediate surrender on Microsoft's part, but it is a retreat in terms of their long-term strategy. .net and c# were originally supposed to replace java. This partnership means they have admitted this will never be possible. It is one in a series of decisions to live with open source that they have been forced to make.

Who knows how many more such concessions there will be in the future? My guess is they will eventually be forced to give in on the closed formats issue and add Open Document Format read/write capability to Office. Enough such surrenders and Microsoft will no longer be the 800 pound gorilla of software.

James: thank you sir

Sam: good point, and i tend to agree. as i outlined, i think the deal is mostly about perceptions, and in practice it's not likely to be a huge impediment to IBM's business. will it lead to new questions in some accounts? sure. but as you note, it's just another development in a competitive market, and it certainly won't be the last. it's a shot across IBM's bow, in other words, rather than a holing below the waterline.

"partnerships" make big news but IMHO are overrated. How do these partnerships stop IBM from continuing to work with Microsoft on interoperability, or stop JBoss from working with PHP?

<strong>Hat Tip To Novell PR: Being More Competitive By Being Less Competitive</strong>

There are a lot of ways that Novell tackle the news its partner JBoss is going to cosy up to Microsoft. This blog from Novell PR though is in my opinion a good way: Microsoft and JBoss underscored this week...
